Lewis Mumford, (born Oct. 19,Flushing, N.Y., U.S.—died Jan. 26,Amenia, N.Y.), American architectural critic, urban planner, and historian who analyzed the effects of technology and urbanization on human societies throughout history.
Mumford studied at the City College of New York and at the New School for Social a student he was influenced by. Although Lewis Mumford is widely acknowledged as the seminal American critic of architecture and urbanism in the twentieth century, he is less known for his art criticism.
